WhatsApp’s New Feature Lets You Lock Individual Chats

WhatsApp is currently developing a new privacy feature that enables users to lock their private chats within the app. This added layer of privacy, which is in the testing phase, will allow users to secure specific chats using a fingerprint, passcode, or face lock. The feature will protect not only text messages but also media files, audios, and documents shared between chat participants.

The Lock Chat feature will require users to enter the designated passcode, even if the WhatsApp platform is already open. If an individual attempts to access a locked chat and repeatedly fails the authentication process, they will need to clear the chat to open it. Presently, the feature is being tested for Android beta, and once it begins to roll out for the public, it will also be available for iOS users.

Locked chats will be archived in a separate folder, making them easy to locate while remaining hidden from plain view. When enabled, the Lock Chat feature will prevent media and audio files shared in locked chats from being automatically saved to the smartphone’s gallery. The WhatsApp beta for Android 2.23.8.2 update, which includes this feature, is currently available on the Google Play Store.
